Introduction
In a groundbreaking move to support students' career planning, the Punjab government has introduced an AI-driven career guidance initiative in its public schools. This innovative program aims to provide personalized, data-driven counseling to help students make informed decisions about their futures.
Pilot Launch of AI Career Guidance Labs
On Sunday, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains inaugurated 25 AI-enabled Career Guidance Labs across government and Punjab School Education Board (PSEB)-affiliated schools. The launch took place simultaneously at Government Senior Secondary School, Nangal, and Government Senior Secondary School for Girls, Sri Anandpur Sahib.
The pilot phase is a collaboration with ed-tech partner Beyond Mentor and is offered free of cost to students. The government plans to closely monitor the program's impact and operational efficiency before expanding it statewide.
How the AI Career Guidance Works
Students starting from class 6 will take an AI-based aptitude and interest assessment through a digital platform. Based on the results, the system generates individualized career reports highlighting potential academic and vocational pathways.
Following the assessment, professional counselors conduct one-on-one sessions with students and their parents to discuss the report and develop actionable career plans. This approach moves beyond generic advice, offering personalized guidance tailored to each student's strengths and interests.
Vision and Impact
Education Minister Bains emphasized that career guidance should be accessible to all students, regardless of their socio-economic background. This initiative reflects the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led government's commitment to preparing youth for the demands of the 21st-century economy.
PSEB Chairman Dr. Amarpal Singh highlighted the shift from exam-focused learning to holistic development, stating that the labs will help students unlock their potential and set tangible career goals beyond just academic marks.
Statements from Officials
Harjot Singh Bains said, "By bringing structured, AI-powered counseling into our government schools, we ensure every child can make an informed choice about their future."
Dr. Amarpal Singh added, "True education is about unlocking potential. These labs will help students understand their innate strengths and translate them into tangible career goals."
Saurav Kumar, CEO of Beyond Mentor, remarked, "Our platform combines technology with human empathy. The AI handles scalable assessment, but the crucial counseling is delivered by professionals, ensuring each child feels heard and guided."
