The Ministry of Education is set to introduce a curriculum on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) for students starting from Class 3. This initiative aims to prepare young learners for a future where AI plays a vital role, embedding ethical use and problem-solving skills from an early age.

Introduction of AI and Computational Thinking in Schools

The Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSE&L) has reaffirmed its commitment to integrating AI and CT as fundamental parts of future-ready education. Beginning with the academic session 2026-27, students from Grade 3 onwards will engage with these subjects, fostering learning, thinking, and teaching approaches that align with the concept of "AI for Public Good."

Collaborative Curriculum Development

To ensure a meaningful and inclusive curriculum, the Department is collaborating with key institutions such as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), as well as various States and Union Territories. This effort is guided by the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SE) 2023 and involves extensive consultations with experts.

CBSE has formed an expert committee led by Prof. Karthik Raman from IIT Madras to develop the AI & CT curriculum. Coordination between NCERT and CBSE through a dedicated committee will ensure smooth integration and maintain quality standards.

Focus on Inclusivity and Teacher Training

Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of DoSE&L, emphasized that AI education should be a universal skill connected to understanding "The World Around Us (TWAU)." The curriculum will be broad-based and inclusive, prioritizing each child's unique potential. Policymakers will set minimum standards and regularly update them to meet evolving needs.

Teacher training is a critical component of this initiative. Programs like NISHTHA will provide grade-specific, time-bound training modules and video resources to support educators in effectively delivering the new curriculum.
