From Small Beginnings to Big Dreams: Mrs. Smita Jumade’s story
January 28, 2025

In conversation with Mrs. Smita Rameshwar Jumade, a dedicated Social Science and English teacher at Noel School, Akola, who has overcome personal challenges to inspire her students and embrace the power of technology in education.

Interviewer: Thank you for joining us, Mrs. Jumade! Let’s start from the beginning—can you tell us about your early years and how they shaped your journey into teaching?

Mrs. Jumade: I come from a very small place and had a bright academic record, but the environment for girls back then was quite strict and different. For example, attending co-ed schools was a ‘big no’ for me. I faced challenges while learning English—especially pronouncing words correctly—but with the assistance of a supportive teacher, I overcame those hurdles.

Initially, I wanted to pursue science, but due to my family’s financial situation, I chose arts instead. It was during that time I developed a passion for teaching. However, circumstances didn’t allow me to pursue a B.Ed degree back then. Despite that, my love for English and teaching only grew stronger.

Interviewer: That must have been difficult, but it’s inspiring to see how you stayed committed to your goals. How did your family support you during this journey?

Mrs. Jumade: My husband, who serves in the Indian Army, has been my pillar of support. After we got married, he encouraged me to focus on my career. When I started looking for opportunities for my daughter’s education, he suggested something that changed my life. He said, “If you can teach your daughter, why not go for classes and become a teacher yourself?”

I joined English classes and, surprisingly, I was the only married woman in my batch. It was challenging, but his encouragement and my daughter’s future kept me motivated. Soon after, I started appearing for teaching interviews, and with hard work and dedication, I secured a teaching job. Since then, my journey has been one of consistent growth—I’ve been promoted every year, and I’ve continued learning to improve myself.

Interviewer: That’s incredible! What subjects do you teach now, and how have you grown professionally over the years?

Mrs. Jumade: I teach Social Studies and English to grades 9 and 10, with History being my primary subject. One of my proudest achievements is completing my B.Ed and even earning a postgraduate degree last year. I strongly believe in being a learner before a teacher.

There was a time when I’d see people speaking fluent English and wonder if I’d ever reach that level. Today, I take pride in not only speaking fluently but also empowering my students to do the same.

Interviewer: That’s a remarkable transformation, Ma’am. How do you view the role of technology in teaching, and how has Class Saathi helped you?

Mrs. Jumade: Technology has become a crucial aspect of education today. Students are often more tech-savvy than teachers, so it’s essential for us to stay updated and adaptable. Rather than imposing restrictions, classrooms should be spaces where students feel comfortable sharing their doubts and ideas.

Class Saathi has been a game-changer for me. It promotes interactive learning, helps students clear their concepts, and provides teachers with valuable insights. I find it incredibly helpful in understanding my students better and creating an engaging classroom environment.

Interviewer: Lastly, what advice would you give to teachers facing challenges similar to the ones you’ve overcome?

Mrs. Jumade: Never stop learning. Challenges will always be there, but persistence and passion can help you overcome anything. As teachers, we are responsible for shaping the future of our students, and for that, we must continue to grow ourselves.

Mrs. Smita Rameshwar Jumade’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and the importance of embracing change in education. Her story inspires us to push through challenges, pursue our passions, and create brighter futures for ourselves and our students.
