Overview of the New MSc Program

The University of Sheffield is excited to announce a new MSc in Human Bioarchaeology and Osteology, launching in September 2026. This postgraduate course offers students the unique opportunity to explore ancient and historic human populations through the scientific study of human skeletal remains. It is designed for graduates aiming to pursue careers in bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, human osteology, and archaeological science.

The program provides advanced training in bone analysis, human anatomy, and laboratory techniques, making it ideal for those with an undergraduate background in related fields.

Hands-On Learning and Practical Training

This MSc emphasizes practical experience. Students will gain expertise in a variety of scientific methods essential to bioarchaeological research, including:

  • Radiography
  • Histological and microscopic analysis
  • Chemical and isotopic techniques
  • Ancient DNA research
  • Lipid analysis
  • Proteomics

Additionally, students will develop specialist skills in functional anatomy, learning to identify human bones, distinguish differences by sex and age, and understand the impact of diseases and injuries on the skeleton. Training also covers both quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Participants will have access to Sheffield’s extensive collection of archaeological specimens, enhancing their confidence in identifying and interpreting skeletal remains. The university’s anatomy laboratory features real human plastinates and full-size digital Anatomage tables, providing detailed visual exploration of the human body.

Field Trips, Lectures, and Research Opportunities

The course includes field visits to archaeological sites and museums, enriching students’ practical knowledge. Lectures cover the history and theory of bioarchaeology and osteology, alongside training in science communication through visuals and audio for research presentations.

A key component of the degree is a three-month independent research project, allowing students to contribute to ongoing archaeological studies.

Admission Requirements, Fees, and Scholarships

Applicants should hold a 3- or 4-year bachelor’s degree with at least 60% in relevant subjects such as Archaeology, Biology, Biochemistry, Forensic Science, Genetics, Medicine, or Zoology.

The overseas tuition fee for 2026 is £30,625.

International students who accept their offer before 7 July 2026, 4pm (UK time), are eligible for an automatic £3,000 International Postgraduate Scholarship—no separate application is needed.
